Visit by Dr Rima Rudd to Ireland

22nd February, 2009

Four national roundtable meetings were held in Dublin in February 2009 with guest speaker and international health literacy expert, Dr. Rima Rudd, Senior Lecturer on Society, Human Development and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The aim of the meetings was to get the issue of health literacy on the public policy agenda, discuss how Ireland can learn from the US experience and spark a debate on the issue among key opinion leaders within the public health sector. Each meeting focused on a different key group: policy makers/key influencers and politicians; patient advocacy groups; healthcare professionals and academics.

Dr Rudd also met with Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, during her visit to Ireland. As a result, Minister Harney confirmed her commitment to health literacy and agreed to fund the European Health Literacy Survey.
